Thousand Oaks is located in Ventura County and is home to around 129,339 residents.  The city forms the core of the Conejo Valley.  Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park were part of a master-planned city in the mid 50’s that included 1000 custom home lots, 2000 single family homes, a regional shopping center, industrial park, and neighborhood shopping centers.  The city ranks as the  fourth safest city of over 100,000 residents in the US by the FBI, making Thousand Oak an ideal community to call home.

The area was once inhabited by the Cumash Indians.  Recorded history of the area dates back to 1542 to the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It then became part of Rancho El Conejo, which was the basis for the name Conejo Valley.  The City of Thousand Oaks was incorporated in 1964, making it the first incorporated city in Conejo Valley.

Shopping & Dining

Thousand Oaks offers a great assortment of shopping and dining choices.  The Oaks Shopping Center offers a number of popular places to shop and eat, with stores such as American Eagle Outfitters, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Kevin Jewelers, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Sunglass Hut, and many others.  The Lakes is another interesting choice for shopping and dining, with stores such as Sunlife Organics, Lassen’s Natural Foods & Vitamins, and Kalologie Skincare.

Dining options abound in Thousand Oaks.  The Lazy Dog Café & Bar offers classic Meat, Fish, Chicken, and Pizza selections along with a full bar.  The Mouthful Eatery appeals to the foodies with tasty sandwiches, sides like tropical slaw, and unique salads.  Other dining choices include Stonefire Grill, Eggs ‘n’ Things, Marcello Ristorante, Karma, Pieology, Harold’s House of Omelettes, and many more.

Parks & Recreation

The Conejo Recreation & Park District serves the people of Thousand Oaks.  It offers a wide range of parks including Banyan Park, one of the oldest park facilities developed in 1967.  Other parks include Cypress Park, Estella Park, Pepper Tree Playfield, Triunfo Park, and many others.  There are also several trail systems for residents to enjoy, such as the Los Robles Trail System, Lang Ranch / Woodbridge Trail System, and Dos Viento Trail System.

Other nearby trails and opens spaces are Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority and Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.


Thousand Oak’s economy is centered on a small range of businesses, with biotechnology, electronics, and other technology-based businesses making up most of the city’s employment.  Top employers include Amgen, The Oaks Mall, Conejo Valley Unified School District, and Los Roble Hospital & Medical Center.


The Conejo Valley Unified School District Serves the students of Thousand Oaks.  The district includes numerous Elementary schools, along with high schools such as Newbery Park High School, Westlake High School, and Thousand Oaks High School.  The Thousand Oaks Library Systems is ranked as one of the best public libraries in the US.
